The Medical Board of Australia has announced that Canadian-trained radiologists will soon be eligible to apply for registration through Australia’s Expedited Specialist Pathway.

Following a comprehensive assessment by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), the Board has approved the inclusion of the Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology awarded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) on the pathway’s accepted qualification list.

From 1 July 2026, specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) who hold an RCPSC Specialist Certificate in Diagnostic Radiology and who commenced their specialist training on or after 1 July 2002 will be eligible to apply through the Expedited Specialist Pathway.

The pathway was introduced in 2024 to attract highly qualified specialists from countries with comparable healthcare and medical education systems, allowing eligible doctors to enter the Australian workforce more efficiently while maintaining high professional standards.

The AMC advised the Medical Board that the Canadian qualification is substantially equivalent and based on competencies similar to Australia’s approved specialist qualification, the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR).

The change is expected to create new opportunities for Canadian radiologists interested in practising in Australia and allow for a faster and more streamlined registration process compared with traditional specialist assessment pathways.
