General Practice

Working as a General Practitioner in New Zealand

GP Jobs in NZ

In New Zealand, essential primary healthcare services are provided to communities through 30 Primary Health Organisations (PHO’s) which are funded by the Ministry of Health. Each PHO provides medical services to the community within their catchment area, either directly or through contracted private doctor run businesses.

The opportunities for General Practitioners interested in working in New Zealand range from roles in small rural practices to larger city community-based practices or Urgent Care Centres.

Regardless of the setting, GPs, Māori health providers, practice nurses and other primary healthcare providers work together within their PHO to improve and maintain the health of the enrolled population.
