GP Jobs in NZ
In New Zealand, essential primary healthcare services are provided to communities through 30 Primary Health Organisations (PHO’s) which are funded by the Ministry of Health. Each PHO provides medical services to the community within their catchment area, either directly or through contracted private doctor run businesses.
The opportunities for General Practitioners interested in working in New Zealand range from roles in small rural practices to larger city community-based practices or Urgent Care Centres.
Regardless of the setting, GPs, Māori health providers, practice nurses and other primary healthcare providers work together within their PHO to improve and maintain the health of the enrolled population.
The remuneration level for General Practitioners in NZ varies depending on experience, hours, location and number/complexity of patient groups they see.
- Junior General Practitioner (vocationally registered) $160,000 – $180,000
- General Practitioner (vocationally registered) $180,000 – $250,00
- General Practitioner (vocationally registered & shareholding) $250,000 +
Benefits include: a minimum of four weeks annual leave, five days study leave and 11 public holidays per annum. Professional expenses are also reimbursed (Medical Council registration, Annual Practicing Certificate, Indemnity Insurance).
Internationally trained General Practitioners (Family Physicians) need to hold a post graduate qualification/ Fellowship in General Practice (Family Medicine), and your combination of qualifications, training and experience will be assessed against the standard of a New Zealand trained GP by the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP).
The pathway to vocational (specialist) registration in the scope of General Practice is dependent on where you trained and the qualification you gained. We advise this process on an individual basis.
More information about registration in the General Practice scope can be found here: https://www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/scopes-of-practice/vocational-and-provisional-vocational/types-of-vocational-scope/general-practice/
We offer support with job placement, medical registration, immigration and settlement, making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.
