Australia’s Medical Board, through AHPRA, has announced a new fast-track registration process for internationally trained medical specialists. This initiative aims to address healthcare shortages by recognising comparable overseas qualifications more efficiently, aiding quicker integration into the Australian health system.

Key Points:

  • The program will initially focus on general practitioners, anaesthetists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, and psychiatrists, identified as having the most urgent needs.
  • AHPRA is consulting with specialist colleges, like the RACGP, to identify and recognise comparable overseas qualifications, streamlining the process
  • Newly registered specialists will work under supervision for six months and complete required adjustments, including cultural safety training and orientation to the Australian healthcare system.
  • Candidates will apply directly to the medical board, bypassing the need for college assessment of their qualifications, though fellowship in a specialist medical college is not guaranteed.

This initiative which begins in late 2024, aims to make Australia a more attractive destination for skilled doctors – addressing persistent medical workforce shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic
