Doctors and healthcare professionals considering a move to Australia have received positive news, with the Australian Government introducing new visa processing priorities for Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa applications.

Under Ministerial Direction 121, which came into effect on 19 September 2026, applications from the healthcare sector have been placed in the highest processing priority category. The priority applies whether an applicant is in Australia or overseas when their visa application is lodged.

What Does This Mean for Doctors?

The change is particularly relevant to medical professionals who require employer sponsorship to work in Australia, including:

  • Specialist doctors
  • International Medical Graduates (IMGs)
  • Radiologists
  • Psychiatrists
  • General Practitioners (GPs)
  • Other eligible healthcare professionals

Healthcare-related applications will now receive priority over most other skilled visa applications under the updated processing arrangements.

For doctors already working through specialist college assessment, medical registration, employment, sponsorship or relocation requirements, the change may help streamline the final stages of their move to Australia.

 

Processing Priority Does Not Mean Guaranteed Processing Times

While healthcare applications now receive the highest processing priority, applicants should be aware that priority processing does not guarantee a specific visa processing timeframe.

The Department of Home Affairs continues to assess applications according to its standard requirements, and processing times can vary depending on application volumes, individual circumstances and operational demands.
