When healthcare professionals choose to relocate across continents, their decision often reflects more than career advancement – it’s also about finding purpose, balance, and a sense of belonging. For Sri Lankan couple Subhashini and her husband, securing roles in South Australia offered not only competitive remuneration and meaningful career progression, but also a welcoming community and a lifestyle that supports both personal wellbeing and professional fulfilment. Their journey highlights the many opportunities available to internationally trained medical professionals.

When Subhashini’s husband received a job offer in South Australia, she didn’t hesitate. As a qualified radiologist, she saw the opportunity not only to advance her career but to embrace a healthier work-life balance. “Relocating to Australia offers a much better work-life balance,” she reflects. “I’m excited about the opportunities this new chapter holds for both of us.”

The professional couple decided to move together to stay connected as a family, supporting each other’s ambitions, and building a life side by side. “It’s especially meaningful that my husband and I can be together,” she says. “We’re excited to begin this new chapter of our lives.”

Navigating New Terrain

While her husband began his role at the regional hospital, Subhashini joined a respected private provider known for its advanced systems and supportive culture. The contrast with her previous experience was striking. In Sri Lanka, she often worked long hours in both public and private sectors, with little time for rest. “I often had to work in the private sector after my regular hours, which left me feeling exhausted,” she recalls. In her new role, she found a refreshing change. “The position not only provides me with the opportunity to build and enhance my skills, but the flexible on-call commitments also allow me to study for my examinations and, most importantly, enjoy quality time off work”.

The transition to Australia’s healthcare system was a learning curve, but one Subhashini embraced this with confidence and curiosity. “Beginning work in Australia as a Radiologist and adapting to a new healthcare system was a significant adjustment,” she reflects. “However, every challenge helped me to grow and become more confident in a new environment.”

Australia’s healthcare landscape introduced new technologies, workflows, and expectations—but Subhashini’s openness to learning and her commitment to excellence allowed her to thrive. She also acknowledges the exceptional support she received from colleagues.

“I have received outstanding support from my supervisors and team members, which has been instrumental in helping me achieve what I have so far,” she shares. “The guidance and motivation I received during my transition into this new role were truly remarkable, and I’m grateful for the encouragement and assistance that made settling in so much easier.”

Settling into life in a new country brought a wealth of experiences and learning opportunities—from navigating housing and local customs to understanding road rules and securing an Australian driver’s license. Each step presented its own day-to-day challenges. Yet these moments of adjustment also fostered connection and community. “We have had the opportunity to join activities of the local church,” she shares, “as the Father of the church was a person from our community.” This sense of cultural familiarity and belonging helped ease the transition, offering both practical support and a meaningful social anchor in their new environment.
