Last week has been a big one for our government here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Following Jacinda Adern’s resignation as Prime Minister, we welcome our new Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, who hasn’t wasted any time in reshuffling some key ministerial portfolios.

This is positive news for the health sector, with Dr Ayesha Verrall moving into the role of Minster of Health.

As a New Zealand and overseas trained Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr Verrall was previously Associate Minister of Health and Minister for Covid-19 Response. She has already made a massive difference within the sector as an expert on vaccines, tuberculosis and COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic response, Dr Verrall was instrumental in efforts to improve New Zealand’s contact tracing. *

We look forward to seeing how our new Minister of Health supports the recruitment and retention of medical specialists, both NZ trained and International Medical Graduates, as we build the future of health in Aotearoa New Zealand.
